For the second year in a row we open our October Newsletter by reporting that a member of the Twinning Association has been named as Bury Woman Of The Year. A year ago, we proudly declared that our Chairman, Mrs. Joyce Johnson, had been awarded this accolade. This year, at a glittering reception at the Bolholt Hotel, organised by Bury Hospice, the title was given to our Hon.

Secretary, Mrs. Yvonne Moore. The award was made in recognition of her very varied voluntary activities; including her role in the Twinning Association, her involvement in a Residents Association and her fundraising for several charities. Each year Yvonne opens her prize winning garden to neighbours and friends to raise funds. Yvonne points out that next year will be no exception and all members are invited to visit on Sunday, 13th June 2010. Proceeds on the day will be shared between the Bury Cancer Support Centre and another charity, yet to be decided

the evening a partnership dinner provided the opportunity to renew old acquaintances. Other activities which took place in glorious weather, included a visit to Ludwigsburg and the annual pumpkin festival there, a wine tasting evening and a visit to a chocolate factory, ending a most successful visit.

STELLA HALL

Long serving member of the Bury Metro Community Twinning Association, Miss Stella Hall, attained her 90th birthday earlier this month. In order to wish her a Happy Ninetieth Birthday, members of the Committee called early in the morning to deliver cards and flowers, before she drove herself up to the Lake District to participate in a residential French course

LANCASHIRE NIGHT

In the last Newsletter, we indicated that we would be holding a Lancashire Night celebration, unfortunately, we have had to cancel the evening’s traditional entertainment proposed for next month. There were problems in finding an appropriate venue and then we simply ran out of time. However, please watch this space. Planning has already begun for a special celebration next year. If any member would like to contribute to ensuring the success of this enterprise perhaps they would contact Mr Alan Shillaker; telephone 01619805928.

ANNIVERSARY VISIT TO SCHORNDORF

A small group of eight visited Schorndorf from 10 September to 14 September as the final part of the 2009 Twinning Anniversary Celebrations. This included the Mayoral party of three (two of whom were also members of the association). This was a joint visit and people from Tulle also participated. A significant aspect of the visit, was the closing ceremony of an exhibition based on the state archives of Württemberg, which detailed the steps

taken in the immediate post-war period by the French Military Administration, to help the German population become aware of the effects of years of Nazi ideology. France was formally represented at the ceremony by the French Cultural Attaché.
